ACU centre Minchinhampton Cup Trial 29/08/10...
Just over 70 riders turned out for the Minchinhampton Cup event held by the Stroud Valley MC on Sunday. This event caters for Novice, Inters, twinshock and pre 65 machine riders and they could have been forgiven for expected a mud fest after what seems like a month of rain in the area. But Nigel Tompkins and his band of helpers had laid on a perfect event for all classes, helped considerably by the quick draining soil in the woods and the heavy tree cover that prevented even the rain shower on the day from penetrating to ground level.
Although most of the sections were dry it only took one rider to spin up on the roots and rocks just under the surface to dramatically alter the section severity and this was very apparent at the ninth where a loose rocky climb up a small water course ended with a double root step out that appeared a piece of cake on first view. Two riders was all it took to drag water and mud onto the roots and the carnage started! Several over or into the bars accidents were witnessed and this section was the main point taker for all classes, and the tenth continued up the same rock path and ended with a muddy climb out of the ditch. The Minchinghampton cup winner for best Novice performance, Merv Walker, lost just a single dab on the 9th but added 7 to his score on the 10th. In fact the only rider to clean section 9 all day was Dave Dawson on his lovely 250 BSA, on the way to the best pre 65 performance.... only Inter winner Tim Wheeler on his yellow Scorpa managed a lower score than Dave, losing just 5 all day. The easier alternative route sections also gave some low scores and a close finish... So close that Tony Sullivan and Rob Cobley could only be separated by most clean, having both finished on 9 marks. Of course, Rob was cheating by riding a modern bike, Tony being on a 200 Cotswold twinshock! Andy Chivers could have joined them in the tie-break but for a single dab on the very last section....

Club AGM. Wednesday 24th Feb 2010

.... After the election of officers, which had no major changes other than the election of Nigel Tomkins to replace Mike Thornhill as club secretary, the meeting got under way with several items up for discussion. One issue was that unfortunately the club will not run a closed to club AMCA series for 2010 as with four centre trials this year and a lower number of committee members the club has decided to concentrate its man power on the ACU centre events.
The club championship will now be run over the four centre trials, with club members from each class collecting points in the trials they ride. Clubs subs will remain at £6.00 for the next year, but the decisions was taken to experiment with increasing the entry fee to £15 for entries in advance and £20 for entries on the day, which is more inline with other clubs in the Western Centre and hopefully encourage more riders to enter in advance. (Entering in advance can include phoning the secretary of the meeting up to the night before the event)
Stroud Valley would like to hear from anyone interested in helping to organise events.., why not come along to one of our club meetings. They take place at 8.00 o'clock on the last Wednesday of the month at The Ship Inn Brimscombe everyone is more than welcome.

Thanks to all that helped out at this event, a bit short on observers at the start but everything was covered in the end. Thanks also to all the riders who turned out, a big entry was blessed with good weather all day.

The second round of the SVMCC club championship took take place on the 7th of November..
... After such a large entry at the first round the club was a little disappointed when only twenty seven riders arrived. Lee Hassall took a convincing win, first time out on his new Gas Gas, on the hard route losing just two marks, a dab on section six on his second and forth visits. Steve Venn had a steady ride to finish second on eleven marks lost. Fourth placed man Dave Morris will be cursing a five caused by a trip over the bars on section two, which handed third place to Andy Perry.
The Fifty/Fifty route was highly competitive with twelve marks separating the first four riders. Kevin Miller took the win on his 300 Gas Gas. Young Tom Culiford was at the other end of the power scale on his 80 GasGas but managed to take third place and Best Youth. The Alternative route was set out with the Pre65's in mind and they took first and second place with Richard Townsend and Rob Halliday beating several much more modern bikes.

Ray Pekala updates on the Return of Breakheart:
..Sorry its been so hush hush but we could not release it to the masses until all was signed.. Breakheart is now ran by a local company set up specifically to run the venue. The company is called Breakheart Community Project Ltd. of which I am chairman. The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority still owns the land but we have secured a lease on the 52 acres site for 99 years.
The main focus of the project is to provide the local populous with an area to enjoy. The other, and more important, issue is that Stroud Valley MCC is mentioned in the lease to the extent that they can run organised Trials, Practice Sessions and Training Days without prejudice for the next 99 years. I believe that we are the only club within the Western Centre that has a guaranteed venue, providing that it is not abused.

SVMC ran the Sapperton Trial on 25th October, at Breakheart Quarry..

Stroud Valley Motor Club ran the Sapperton cup trial, a Centre Championship event on Sunday. The event was staged at the popular Breakheart quarry venue near Dursley, which has not been available for the last few years, however thanks to a lot of hard work behind the scenes the club has hopefully secured this great venue for future years.. (see link on the left for more info)

Nearly eighty riders, some from as far a field as Coventry and Oxford started the twelve section three lap event, using both the quarry itself and some of the steep bankings that surround it. Simon Welch has already secured the 2009 western centre trials championship, but was still fired up for the event and took the win with a loss of just four marks, two of which being on the relatively easy rooty turn of section seven, which was observed by Richard Smith. Things were very close between all the other riders on the standard route and it was John Luff who took second with a score of twelve, half of which were already lost after his poor first lap.
Out of centre rider Daniel Clark took third place having a good ride to finish on fourteen marks. It was great to see Craig Bond back riding again and taking the win on the fifty/fifty route from Darren Walters, with ever improving Nathan Pekala taking best youth and third overall. The Alternative route saw Tim Wheeler take a narrow victory with a five on the slippery logs of section five almost allowing second place man Nick Toms to get his name to the top of the results sheet.
Ron Walters came out on top of the sportsman route, after only dropping three, one mark losses in the whole event. But with just five marks separating the first four on this route the competition was certainly tight.

Stroud Valley Motor Club members Mark Thornhill, John Luff, Ryan Pekala and Heath Brindley, in conjunction with Zona 1 motor club and Steve Saunders, took part in an arena trial in Kings Square near Gloucester city centre. The event was great publicity, with shoppers of all ages watching Mark and John and their motorcycles and Ryan and Heath on their trials push bikes.

Round one of the Stroud Valley Motorcycle Club Championship was held Sunday, 16th of August at Ashmeads Farm near Dursley. A large entry of eighty one riders turned out for the ten section four lap event, which took place in bright sunshine. The sections, set in the streams and ditches of the farm, got progressively worse during the event as any water was quickly dragged on to the banks. Section six observed by Mark Thornhill was testament to this with many a clean recorded on the first lap, but by the forth lap threes and fives were the order. It was on this section that the eventually winner Lee Hassal lost all bar two of his eleven marks. Second place rider Leo Rochfort actually lost the same as Lee on this section, but lost out after a two and a one mark effort on section four. It was good to see Ben Bowkett riding again after a few months away from trials, but a five for going the wrong way in a section spoilt his chances of a win. The club ran a 50/50 route for the first time in one of its closed to club trials. Out of centre rider Mark Stokes made his journey worth while, winning this route on his twinshock Montesa, proving that you don't need the latest modern bike to ride well. Jim Delahay and Terry Cole were second and Third of the nineteen riders on this new route. Evergreen Bob Gollner took the win on the alternative route losing just one mark on section ten. Second place went to Ian Wathen who has been riding a lot of in enduros of late, who had a good ride mounted on his BSA. ..Full Results Here.

Stroud Valleys Motor Clubs latest committee meeting raised some interesting issues. Most noticeable the idea of running a 50/50 route between the easy route and the alternative route. The club is keen to hear riders opinions on this, please email your comments to John Luff ..
... The club has also started arranging an event to celebrate its centenary, next year. This will take the form of a two day trial, with overnight camping and entertainment. It will be staged in early June 2010. The venue and further details will follow as they become available.

And perhaps the biggest talking point was the possibility of making SVMC a limited company, details of the advantages and disadvantages can be found on this document ... please read and pass comments onto the committee, or email thoughts to John at his email address above.

SVMC have managed to loose a number of the clubs awards over the years. A major award was recently found in a riders loft, so they are still out there. We are holding  an awards amnesty, we are not worried how long people have had them, we just need them to be returned.

The list of missing awards is as follows.

Chalford Cup
Sams Salver
348 Throphy
Minchinhampton Cup
I.C.E Throphy.
